With backing from Israel's Mossad and the U.S. CIA, Kurdish armed groups are reportedly preparing for a ground attack on Iran, according to Axios.
The report notes that "a Kurdish ground attack coordinated with U.S. and Israeli airstrikes on Tehran could increase pressure on the Iranian regime and encourage an uprising that could spread to other parts of the country."
Six days before the U.S. and Israel launched their attack on Iran, five Kurdish groups based in Iraq, with thousands of fighters along the Iranian border, announced the formation of the Alliance of Political Forces of Iranian Kurdistan to fight the Tehran regime.
According to Axios, in recent weeks these Kurdish groups have sent hundreds of members across the border into Iran as part of preparations for a potential ground attack.
The operation's goal—if carried out—would be to seize specific territories in Iran's Kurdish region to challenge the regime and spark a broader uprising, according to a U.S. official.
"While the war began with U.S. and Israeli armies, as it continues, there will be additional efforts from Mossad and the CIA," an Israeli official told Axios.
A U.S. official stated that the idea to support the Kurdish factions and use them for a ground attack from Iraq into Iran originated with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Mossad, with the CIA joining later.
The same official added that Israel promised the Kurds not only military support but also political backing for the formation of an autonomous Kurdish region in a future Iran, in the event of the regime's collapse.
