Greek athletes consistently excel in global sports. One name we hadn't heard before is John Poulakidas, who made his NBA debut with the Dallas Mavericks.
He is a 22-year-old Greek-American guard. He was born on April 4, 2003, in Illinois, USA, and stands 1.98 meters tall (6'6″).
He is a second-generation Greek, with his parents working as entrepreneurs. However, he does not hold a Greek passport.
He attended Neuqua Valley High School, where he posted excellent averages of 17.5 points and 4.6 rebounds per game.
When it was time to choose a college, he selected Yale. After his first year at the university, both his numbers and his playing time increased.
Following the 2021–22 season, in which he played 20 games and averaged 1.9 points in 5.1 minutes per game, he had a breakout season in 2022–23.
That season, he averaged 12.2 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 1.4 assists in 29 games, playing 29.7 minutes per game.
His numbers were similar the following year (13.6 points, 2.4 rebounds, 1.9 assists), but his best season came in his final year of college.
During the 2024–25 season, Poulakidas elevated his performance significantly, averaging 19.4 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 1.2 assists in 26 games, playing 35 minutes per game.
A highlight of his NCAA journey was leading Yale to an upset victory over Auburn in March Madness 2024, scoring 28 points and shooting 6/9 from three-point range.
In the summer of 2025, he played with the Los Angeles Clippers in the Summer League but ultimately was not selected in the NBA Draft.
The 22-year-old guard was unable to convince the Clippers that he deserved a spot on the roster and went on to play for their affiliate team. This season, he averaged 12.5 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 1.4 assists in 35 games.
He also holds the record for the most three-pointers made in a single game for the San Diego Clippers, with 10 threes against the South Bay Lakers.
The Dallas Mavericks decided to give him an opportunity by offering him a two-way contract.
He immediately made his NBA debut against the Hornets, recording 5 rebounds and 2 assists in 14 minutes and 28 seconds of playing time.
His journey with his new team has just begun, and it remains to be seen whether he will be able to establish himself in the league and build a career in the NBA.
However, the moment of his first appearance on an NBA court will surely remain etched in his memory, despite the fact that his team suffered a heavy defeat in his league debut.
